I don't think I'd be wrong in saying if anyone on here experienced a sudden windfall, we would buy an absurd number of cars. Sadly, most of us aren't in that position and can't live like Jay Leno. I was thinking the other day about what my ideal two-car garage would be if I were to make a nice living when I graduate (currently poor college student). My dad recently bought an FR-S and I'm hopelessly in love with that car. This might get me killed, but I'm not a big Miata guy. I want to drive one and see what all the fuss is about, but I would never buy a convertible. I've rode in plenty and don't find the top-down experience to be worth having a piece of canvas for a roof. The FR-S is damn near perfect in my book. The precise steering, the addictive gear box, the high rpm power and how absurdly easy it is to get the tail out make it one of the my favorite cars I've driven. The only gripe I have about the car is the clutch, which is a bit high for my tastes, but I'm used to it now. Sadly, if I am going to live the American dream with a wife and 2.5 kids, that car is a bit impractical. But why compromise?
My somewhat attainable two car garage would have a Hot Lava FR-S with a stick for my commute and hoonage needs
(EDIT I just realized when I posted the link to this photo it just reposted the photo... whoops. The photo credit goes to Motortrend)
and a Ram 2500 Cummins Crew Cab, with a stick of course, for tailgating, off-roading and haulin around the family and my stuff. Because Kentucky... and torque
(photo credit: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )
I already professed my undying love for the FR-S, but my desire for a huge diesel truck may seem silly to some of you. Allow me to explain. I drove one of these bad boys when I was helping my dad move and holy shit... the power! It just doesn't stop. When you think its gonna settle down and quit pulling, guess what it does? Pulls harder. It's absolutely ballistic. There's nothing I need 800 lb-ft of torque for aside from ruining tires. But if I were to decide I want to run LeMons or something, I have a truck to pull my beater with. If I want to go off-roading, I have a truck to do it with.
The big ass Ram and the FR-S make for the perfect combination. I have a truck for long trips, haulin shit and keepin the family safe, and an FR-S to track and drive most of the time. If I stick the future wife in the Ram that would be pretty hot. Something about girls in trucks... I always expect to see an old dude with a lip full of Copenhagen behind the wheel when I pull up next to a truck, but every once in a while I get the pleasant surprise of seeing a stone cold fox driving one. It gets me every time.
Anyways, the truck came out to $53,000 on the Ram configurator, and the FR-S is $28,00. That set up comes out to $81,000, something that could be doable for me if I manage to make the most of my degree. I'm feeling all motivated now after this, time to study. What would your dream two-car garage have in it?

If you are still in college, unless you practice wildly unsafe sex, you should have some time before the 2.5 kids arrive. Go impractical and fun and enjoy it. You won't always have that luxury.

OH and the big truck could be kinda cool. I'm actually curious if one of those would make a good family mobile. The extended cab/crew cab models are huge inside.
Consider buying used for both of those, you can cut that $81K by 1/3 or more by purchasing something with 20K miles or something.

I'd have an FC170 with 4WD and a Jeep stroker motor (mostly because I have one just sitting around). This would be my truck/camper/off road adventure vehicle.
For my commuter/DD I'd like a mid-size executive car, I'm thinking a 535i for a nice balance of power and efficiency. RWD is fine for me, and if I lose interest there's always room for more boost.

Curently still a single Mercedes W140 S600. But because my brother live in my house during his college, so there's his car, a W123 300D
It's 2 car, right?
*slap myself
Anyway, now i'm still in process of registering a Blue 1989 Mazda Cosmo for myself. So finally i'm already have 2 of my dream cars.
If i have an unlimited budget i might as well restoring my grandpa's 190SL..

Wait a while for the kids, get an FR-S, enjoy the FR-S, eventually have kids, trade up for a nice sedan, which is probably what you'll want by that point in your life anyway.

Kind of my combo. I have 370Z which I dd, and a Ram 1500 4WD which I use for hauling crap, snowboard trips, and multiple passenger trips.
I REALLY wish someone would make a tacoma-sized pickup with a hybrid engine. I don't need the boat-hauling power of the Ram, but I do want 5-seats, AWD, and a largish pickup bed. I'd be fine with slow acceleration if I got good MPGs.

I was thinking my adult life when I have 2.5 kids responsibly. I'd imagine they'd do great though, aside from being so high up off the ground, but that's why they make running boards. These two are both fun, but also somewhat practical, so it's a win win!

I really hope this new batch of small trucks supposedly coming in the near future will be good. I've always liked them and to be honest, 90% of people that drive full size pickups, at least here in Kentucky would be fine with a Tacoma sized truck.

I'm thinking nice sedan when I'm like 60 and hate the idea of getting in and out of a sports car. All this is hypothetical too, so the odds of me actually getting these cars are slim.

That FC170 is awesome. I kind of thought that with my selections too. With a Cummins and an FR-S, you have two great platforms for aftermarket upgrades, so I'd be able to tinker with the cars when I get bored.

I have an unhealthy obsession with W123 diesels. A guy I played football with in high school had one and I always thought there was nothing more bad ass than a TURBODIESEL emblem.

I have the mind of a 60-year-old already...

Ya.
I was thinking to buy him a W124 as a present, but then i saw a white W123 with Turbodiesel badge in it.
Then i just buy that thing with a heartbeat.

I really want one. There's nothing that says, "I keep it classy, but I'm not ostentatious" like an old-ass Benz.

I feel like I do too. As a young car guy I feel like nobody else my age really gives a shit about cars anymore. They're either hipster environmentalists, or don't know enough about cars to realize a Hyundai Tiburon isn't a Ferrari.

Not a farfetched dream. Used FR-S' will be populating the market in the next 2-3 years. Most around $16-19K i presume.

People my age around where I live think being a car guy is buying a 90s civic hatch and chopping the springs, fart can, spoiler, the whole bit. Everything here is modified, almost always distastefully. Sad.

I'd get another 2500 Yukon XL and have a diesel swap done, then put a Panamera in the other side for DD duties.
Right now my '73 Buick LeSabre serves my towing duties and the Panamera side is filled by my '54 MG, which is a fun little car but I can't take the family in it. I'm not a big fan of two-seaters. Actually I'd like to just finish fixing up the '73 Buick and that will serve all of my needs. So I only need like $20K to have somebody else finish the bodywork in progress and build a sick motor for it.

That was the goal of the post, an attainable dream garage!

WRX Sedan and a Prius because damn you can put alot of gear in a Prius. Also, how many vehicles have a stealth mode? Good for evading those pesky zombie hordes.

If the high engagement point of the clutch is your only gripe, that can be fixed in about 10 mins. There is nice guide for adjusting that in the DIY section of the ft86club forums. Haven't done it personally as its the first car I've owned with a stick and don't mind it, but its supposed to be easy.

Somewhat attainable now, or somewhat attainable in retirement? :P For now, I'd go for a 2 seater convertible since it's just me and the wife at the moment (and the next several years), probably a Lotus Elise or BMW M Roadster...both can be had for around 30k. Unless my wife also gets 2 cars, I'm guessing the other one will be her daily driver and, bless her heart, she wants an M5. Chances are she wouldn't want the E39, and the F10 isn't exactly attainable so I'd probably have to shell out 35-40k for a decent E60.

For the record, my dream garage would be my current FR-S, and a 2001 NSX. Forget practical, i'll leave that to the driveway or street....

not the most practical garage, but i like what i like, and id rather be happy and impractical than practical and bored

My FR-S and an Ariel Atom 300, who needs practicality when Hooning and rip your face off at all times is available and somewhat affordable!

I have attained my two car garage. A uses 2012 Audi A5 and the ideal used sports car a low mileage 1991 Miata. The Miata is reliable as a hammer, so much fun to drive, free of modern nanny thingies. Easy to make fast, an on going project. Who could ask for any thing more.

Hmmmm.... not me! That sounds like a pretty ideal set up, congrats.
